For those who wish to explore there is plenty to see locally. Take a bicycle or a three-wheel tuk tuk along the back lanes and see village life unfold. There are temples galore often build in the most delightful settings. Spend time in Galle Fort and walk the ramparts at dusk to witness a glorious sunset or visit Matara with its historic Star Fort and bustling shops and markets.
For the enthusiastic, birdlife is colourful and abundant. Gardeners will enjoy the wonderful variety of plants and trees. Wildlife can be observed in Yala National park, Sri Lanka’s most popular wildlife safari park. Situated in the South Eastern corner of the island, the park is famous for its high density of leopards, perhaps the highest in the world. You are also sure to see elephants and sloth bears. You will also see mammals such as wild boars, several species of deer and wild buffalo. There is a plethora of reptilian species and platoons of crocodiles. As in common in Sri Lanka there is a huge diversity of stunning birdlife including migratory species such as the flamingo. It is also one of the few places in the world where the severely endangered black necked stork can be seen.
Beaches in the area include Unawatuna with its beautiful sweeping bay for all year round swimming as well as many quieter spots such as Mirissa and Tangalle which cater for sunbathers, swimmers and surfers or pick your own deserted cove along the way. Boat trips, snorkelling and diving can all be arranged.
